Re’eh – Echoes Through Scripture

Torah Portion Re’eh

Deuteronomy 11:26 – 16:17

This year we will be going through the Torah portion cycle looking for themes which occur in each Torah portion that recurs throughout the rest of Scripture with a special focus on connecting them to the Apostolic Writings (New Testament).

In Re’eh, we will look at the Sh’mittah year (7th year sabbatical year) and how it was supposed to be about a release of slaves and debt. However, in Jeremiah 34, we see a people who have not been keeping such a commandment and even renege on a promise of release to YHWH. This sets up the problem of the laws of Prosbul in the first-century culture. We will also look at what exactly the word “Hebrew” means in the Torah.
